General Insurance Agency is an independent agency representing many of the top insurance companies in the Midwest and United States. We work with our providers to offer coverage on home, auto, recreational vehicles, life, umbrella, business and commercial, worker’s compensation, bonds, and countless specialty markets that standard carriers stay away from. Our agency is licensed in the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Florida, Arizona, and North Dakota.

Our History

In 1917, Peoples State Bank built a bank on Sophie Street in Bessemer, MI. After experiencing the rapid growth on the Gogebic Range, the bank’s operation came to a sudden halt in 1932 as itself and many other financial organizations folded during the uncertainty of the Great Depression. In 1933, George Mazanec opened General Insurance Agency in the original bank office of the building while numerous other professional tenants rented office space throughout the remainder of the building. In 1936, Dr. Kuivinen and Attorney, William Pellow, purchased the building as they had been long-time tenants of the upstairs offices. In 1959, Roy Malmberg purchased General Insurance from Mr. Mazanec along with the building from Dr. Kuivinen and Mr. Pellow. Today, General Insurance and the Peoples State Bank building are still proudly owned and operated by the Malmberg family.
